There could be two different ways that you are being blocked from accessing a website:

the website itself could be blocking you or

some content filter could block you from accessing a website

Unblocking Websites That Are Blocking You

Most websites that block people’s access does it by blocking a specific IP address or range of IP addresses. This type of block is designed to block where you are coming from. For example some websites could blocks access to entire countries. The way to get around this type of block is to change your IP address, either permanently or temporarily.

Unblocking Websites That You Are Blocked From

More often, your access to websites, such as MySpace, will be blocked by a “content filter” on your network. Content filters are popular in schools, businesses, and on some public access networks. Content filters block access to websites which are considered undesirable, because they contain content that people don’t want you to see, or at least don’t want you to see right then.

Most schools block access to MySpace, because it can distract students from their studies. Content filters typically block pornography, to keep it out of schools and workplaces. Other content which is commonly filtered includes websites about drugs, politics, religion, gambling, hacking, and entertainment.

The best and fastest way to get around both type of block is to use an anonymous web proxy.

How can I Bypass Websense?

Many businesses and government institutions use a content filtering program such as Websense to keep employees from visiting certain websites while at work. These programs can either prohibit the use of certain websites or monitor all of the sites that employees do visit while in the office. Websense is designed to block websites in several categories, such as adult material, entertainment, drugs, games, sports, internet communication, peer-to-peer file sharing, gambling, instant messaging, health, illegal, shopping, job search, internet telephony, religion, special events, travel, violence, weapons, advertisements, freeware and software download, pay-to-surf, malicious websites, and many more.

The concept behind Websense is simple, whenever an employee attempts to visit a specific webpage; a request is generated and then passes through a firewall. Websense looks at this request and answers yes or no depending on if the requested URL is in the Websense database. In transparent mode, Websense counts on the fact that the firewall will forward the whole request in a single time. If the whole request is not transferred at one time, Websense will allow the packet to pass, as the packet doesn’t look like a HTTP request. If you want to bypass Websense and browse any page, you can use several techniques to bypass Websense filtering and authentication process.

Bypassing Websense using a Web Proxy

One method used to bypass Websense is to use a web-based proxy site. With a proxy, Websense sees you browse to the web proxy - not to the web site you are actually browsing to. You browse to the web proxy, and then the web proxy browses to the web site you want to visit. This is probably the simplest way to get around the Websense program as it takes little time and no one will wonder what you are up to.

Bypassing Websense using HTTP Tunneling

You can also bypass Websense by using HTTP Tunneling. HTTP Tunneling programs work well to bypass Websense. Most programs also come with options, which help you to destroy the history of your Internet and Widows activity. What this means is that you can ensure comfort and security of your online activities and can spoof your web browser information. HTTP Tunneling software programs can be fount on the Internet easily and inexpensively.

Anonymous surfing, or browsing, is simply browsing the internet with most of your identity hidden. This can be accomplished by using an anonymous browser based proxy or web proxy. These are websites you can use to input the web page you wish to visit, and the service will take you to that webpage with information such as the location of your computer and your IP address hidden from the web page.

In details: when a user tries to access a web page, the proxy will talk to that web page as an ambassador of the user, maintaining the privacy of the user. The practice of anonymous browsing can also preserve the privacy of the user from potential loggers spying on the user’s connection.

Effectiveness of Anonymous Browsing

Because anonymous browsing lets the user bypass restrictions in the Internet connection such as a simple firewall, it is a widely used technique. It is especially used often in schools and offices where there are heavy restrictions on web pages that are accessible. Students will anonymously browse to gain access to social networking websites blocked by the school’s tech office like MySpace, FaceBook, Hi5, Bebo, YouTube, and like. Office workers will also anonymously browse because this can help them bypass the restrictions set by the employers, or to not leave any tracks of browsed websites in case that the employers are monitoring their Internet usage.

In addition to hiding your IP address, an anonymous proxy server will typically remove traffic such as:

Cookies

Scripts

Pop-ups

Banners

Referrer information

These options should be configurable by the end-user to enable to proxy server to work with web sites which require cookies or pop-ups.

Web Proxy Services for Anonymous Surfing

Anonymous web proxy services tend to be somewhat unstable, the list of current anonymous web proxy services changes constantly. In addition, some anonymous web proxy services are free services and others are not.

Anonymous browsing is a very easy way to browse without needing to worry too much about information such as the IP address being released publicly. Nonetheless, it is critical to double check whether a certain anonymous browsing service is honorable or not to prevent any, potentially even worse, disasters from occurring.

When you use a web proxy to connect to certain website URL, your browser never connects to that website URL directly. Instead, it always connects to the proxy server, and asks it to get the website for you.

A proxy server receives from you a request for an internet service, such as a request for a webpage. The proxy server looks in its local cache of previously downloaded web pages. If it finds the page, it returns it to you without needing to forward the request to the Internet. If the page is not in the cache, the proxy server, acting as a client, requests the page from the internet. When the page is returned, the proxy server forwards it to you.

To your browser, all internet requests and returned responses appear to be directly with the addressed website URL.

Proxies can be used as a sort of firewall, because it isolates you from connecting to the Internet.
When you connect to a web site, your true IP address will not be shown, but the proxy servers IP address will.

You can use it to protect yourself. It can be used to hide your IP which is useful because it means hackers cannot get info about you when using it. They will only get the proxy servers IP address.

An benefit of using a proxy server is that its cache can serve all users. If one or more internet sites are frequently requested, these are likely to be in the proxy’s cache, which will improve user response time.

A network bans a website either by its IP, its domain name or part of it.

When using a web proxy, your network can see only the web proxy name and address and not the actual destination of the user. A web proxy site loads the desired destination address and displays it to you as it was part of the web proxy site. The admin of the network will think everything is fine and you are free to reach the site that is banned.

The only thing that might happen is that the admin ban the web proxy as well, but this is not a big deal either. Hundreds of web proxies exist, just switch to a new one and you are ready to visit the banned site again.

Whenever you surf the internet your ip address (or WAN IP) is being logged by every website you visit. A simple check of web logs will show the ip address of everyone that visited a particular website.

These logs can be kept for years, and can send a trace back to you! It’s not a matter of just covering your tracks as most of us have nothing to hide, it’s a matter of privacy.
